Turkey Postpones Court Hearings in Case of AFP Photographer and Other Journalists

Today, court hearings were held in Turkey regarding journalists and lawyers who were arrested and later released during protests in Sarachane.

Among them is AFP photojournalist Yasin Akgül. They are accused of “violating the law on assemblies and demonstrations.”

The judge postponed the hearing until November 27.

The first hearing in the case, in which 99 students, 8 journalists, and 4 lawyers were charged for participating in the Sarachane protests that led to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor and Republican People’s Party (CHP) presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, took place on April 18.

One of Akgül’s lawyers, Batıkan Erkoç, stated: “There is no evidence in the case, and if no evidence is presented at the hearing, the trial cannot proceed. Continuation of the trial is impossible.”
