Sputnik Armenia: Russia has not petitioned to Armenia on opening  consulate in Syunik Province

The press service of the Russian embassy in Armenia informed Sputnik Armenia that there were no petitions—through the embassy—to the Armenian side for the opening of a Russian consulate in Syunik Province.

Earlier, Zhoghovurd daily of Armenia wrote that after the opening of the Iranian consulate general in Syunik, the Russian embassy also expressed its desire to open a diplomatic representation in this region. Allegedly, Russia informed—through various channels—the Armenian authorities about these intentions.

The newspaper had sent a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, asking to clarify whether Russia has officially or unofficially petitioned to Armenia to open a consulate. In response, the foreign ministry noted that Armenia had not received an official proposal from Russia to open a Russian consulate in Syunik Province.

The Consulate General of Iran in Kapan city of Syunik Province was opened on October 21, 2022. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian  were on hand at the official opening ceremony.
