Suella Braverman, who is back at home secretary just six days after resigning over a security breach, deserves a second chance, Nadhim Zahawi has said amid backlash over her reappointment.

“She admitted her mistake, she resigned. A new prime minister came in, looked at the information and decided that he wants to give her a second chance,” the Tory party chair told Sky News.

“I think that is the right decision. Redemption is a good thing.”

Ms Braverman resigned last week after she was caught sending a Tory backbencher an official document from a personal email account and accidently copied in another Tory MP’s aide who raised the alarm.

Sir Jake Berry, who was Tory party chair at the time, claimed the home secretary had committed “multiple breaches of the ministerial code” in an interview last night.

He said she was responsible for a “really serious breach” relating to confidential government discussions of cybersecurity.

Questioning why she had been brought back so quickly, presenter Niall Paterson said: “It’s not as if Suella Braverman is the intellectual powerhouse of the Conservative movement”.

Mr Zahawi said this was “very rude” and asked him to “reflect” on the comments:

Last night, a minister claimed there had been “multiple breaches” of the ministerial code.

But Nadhim Zahawi has defended Rishi Sunak’s decision to bring Ms Braverman back within a week.

The minister said: “She admitted her mistake, she resigned. A new prime minister came in, looked at the information and decided that he wants to give her a second chance,” he told Sky News.

“It think that is the right decision. Redemption is a good thing.”

1666851048Exempt housing system ‘a complete mess’ which fails vulnerable residentsThe exempt housing system in England is a “complete mess” that lets down vulnerable residents and rips off taxpayers, a damning report from MPs has concluded.

Vulnerable people in need of support are being exploited, while providers make excessive profits by capitalising on loopholes, the cross-party Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee said.

It urged the government to set compulsory minimum national standards and keep track of providers through a register, amid increasing concerns around quality and lack of regulation.

1666850909UK government urged to back campaign for paid marriage leaveA petition calling on the UK government to support a campaign to introduce paid miscarriage leave before 24 weeks has been launched by the SNP.

If the petition, started by Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley, receives enough support it could lead to a debate on the issue in Westminster.

The SNP MP said it will allow the public to “tell the government directly how strongly they feel” on the matter.

Ms Crawley’s Private Member’s Bill seeks to grant three days of statutory paid leave to parents who experience a miscarriage before 24 weeks of pregnancy.

It will have its second reading in the House of Commons in December.

The call comes after a joint letter from 50 cross-party MPs was last month sent to then prime minister Liz Truss and cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg urging the government to lend its support.

Ms Crawley said: “There is political support at Westminster to introduce statutory paid miscarriage leave but the UK government have yet to recognise this.

“By launching this petition, we are giving the public the chance to show their support for paid miscarriage leave and to tell the government directly how strongly they feel and how important this issue is.

If the UK government get behind the Miscarriage Leave Bill, we can take a positive step towards eliminating the stigma associated with miscarriage and pregnancy loss as well as properly supporting parents who experience miscarriage before 24 weeks.

1666849709Assembly to be recalled in last-gasp bid to avoid Stormont electionMLAs will return to Stormont in a last-gasp bid to restore the Northern Ireland executive before fresh Assembly elections are called.

The sitting will see an attempt to elect a new speaker – a prerequisite before an executive can be appointed – but that bid is set to fail as the DUP will use its veto to block it.

The special sitting comes just hours ahead of a deadline for calling another election.

A six-month legislative time frame to form an administration expires just after midnight early on Friday.

1666849209PM tells Taoiseach he wants ‘negotiated outcome’ to NI ProtocolRishi Sunak has told Taoiseach Micheal Martin that he would prefers a “negotiated outcome” to issues caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The two leaders held a phone conversation yesterday evening.

Mr Martin said they discussed the need to find “agreed solutions” on the protocol.

The post-Brexit trading treaty, which is fiercely opposed by unionists in Northern Ireland, has led to the collapse of the Stormont Assembly and Executive.

1666848264ICYMI: Sunak refuses general election as Starmer mocks PM for losing to Truss ‘who lost to lettuce’Sir Keir questioned Mr Sunak’s mandate to lead as he repeated his call for a snap vote during a feisty first exchange between the party leaders at PMQs on Wednesday.

“He got trounced by the former prime minister, who herself got beaten by a lettuce,” the Labour leader told the Commons – referring to the viral campaign which saw Ms Truss fail to stay at No 10 longer than a decaying vegetable.

1666848194Election looms in Northern Ireland as minister holds last-ditch talksThe Northern Ireland secretary’s last-ditch talks with party leaders aimed at restoring powersharing at Stormont appear to have failed, as a deadline for another election in the region looms.

Chris Heaton-Harris, reappointed to his role by Rishi Sunak amid Tory turmoil, has made clear he will call a fresh poll if Friday’s deadline passes without an executive being formed.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has refused to engage in the wake of May’s election over its hatred of the Northern Ireland Protocol in the Brexit deal, so it has not been possible to form an executive for six months.
