MP explains matter of Rome Statute acceptance by Armenia

Vladimir Vardanyan, chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, explained, during a press conference Monday, the matter of acceptance of the Rome Statute by Armenia.

“The Constitutional Court has adopted a relevant decision that the legal obligations established by the Statute of the International Criminal Court comply with the Constitution of Armenia. The government has adopted a relevant decision. And submitting a draft law on the ratification of an international treaty is the exclusive competence of the government. If a draft is submitted, the National Assembly will discuss [it] and make a decision,” said Vardanyan.

And when asked whether the respective deadlines have passed, Vardanyan stated that when it comes to international agreements, the matter of deadlines is not clear-cut, they are determined by internal and external legal processes, and here one should rather focus on the will, desire and position, and one has to wait for the completion of the domestic process and the submission of the draft.
