Doyle, 53, wore a black suit, white shirt and grey tie, and spoke with a croaky voice to confirm his name and address at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court.

He is accused of seven offences including two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving following the incident on Water Street in the city centre, which injured 79 people.

There is a heavy police presence outside the courtroom, which is just a few minutes walk away from the scene of the tragedy. At least 50 people were queuing this morning to get inside.

The father-of-three was also charged with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of wounding with intent.

Up to a million supporters had gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th league title in a 10-mile parade in the city.

Former Royal Marine Paul Doyle ‘holds back tears’ in courtDoyle, 53, wearing a black suit, white shirt and grey tie, looked emotional as he came into the courtroom at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.

Doyle looked around at the dozens of reporters packing the courtroom as he was brought in from the cells, his face crumpling slightly as he held back tears.

District Judge Paul Healey asked for the defendant to identify himself and in a croaky voice, Doyle confirmed his name, gave his date of birth and address in Liverpool

More legal discussions take place, before Mr Healey again adjourns the case for legal advice.

Liverpool courtroom packed out with journalistsThe courtroom for the case of Paul Doyle is filled with members of the press, Alex Ross reports.

Some are sat in chairs usually reserved for members of a jury. There are at least 25 in the room, with more watching remotely.

An overfill room at the court has also been set up for some journalists unable to get inside.

Heavy police presence in Liverpool city CentreIn the city centre, I’ve counted more than 30 police officers patrolling the area, Alex Ross reports.

Many are stationed outside the Magistrates’ court, which is only a short walk from Water Street.

This is where the crash took place during the Liverpool parade on Monday. There is also a minibus serving as a mobile police station.
