During the exchange of views at the plenary session of the European Parliament, the latter’s members (MEPs) asked Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, criticizing questions about the ongoing blockade by Azerbaijan against the people of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the EU policy in this regard.
The majority of MEPs who spoke during the session reaffirmed the need for a stricter EU stance against Azerbaijani aggression and condemned Azerbaijan’s policy of Armenian ethnic cleansing in Artsakh.
They condemned the inaction of the EU leadership regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and noted the unproductiveness of the current EU civilian monitoring mission in Armenia.
In addition, the MEPs called on the EU leadership to use its leverage to lift the blockade of the Lachine corridor, which has led to a humanitarian crisis.
Also, the MEPs called for sanctions against Azerbaijan, which does not respect international agreements and court decisions.
Views were expressed that the EU executive power seems to be unable to properly condemn the major violations of the fundamental rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.
