Azerbaijani authorities have sentenced Karen Avanesyan, an Armenian resident of Stepanakert, the capital of Azerbaijan-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, to 16 years in prison.
The verdict was announced in court today, APA reports. The prosecution had demanded 18 years in prison for Avanesyan.
The circumstances of the act with which Karen Avanesyan (born in 1967) is charged are known solely through information provided by the Azerbaijani authorities. He is charged with allegedly attempting to kill two Azerbaijani police officers. The incident allegedly took place on September 14.
