Boris Johnson \u2018out of touch\u2019 over cost of living crisis, says Keir Starmer<\/p>\n
The Conservatives are on course to lose \u201chundreds\u201d of seats, an elections guru warned ahead of polls opening across the UK today. <\/p>\n
In an article for The Independent, Sir John Curtice warned that the Conservatives were on course to suffer major losses in the first big test of public opinion since the Partygate scandal hit headlines.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the leader of one grassroots Tory group told The Independent that anger about the No 10 parties, topped up by fears over rising living costs, pointed to the party\u2019s supporters staying at home on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople most affected by lockdown \u2013 those who missed weddings and funerals \u2013 still consider it a scandalous disgrace, and now they are feeling the impact of higher taxes and energy costs as well,\u201d said John Strafford, head of the Campaign for Conservative Democracy.<\/p>\n
It follows claims from Angela Rayner that Tory election candidates are ashamed to be linked with the prime minister, by running as \u201clocal Conservatives\u201d and pleading with voters not to \u201cpunish\u201d them for the Partygate scandal.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt speaks volumes that Boris Johnson\u2019s own Conservative candidates are ashamed to be associated with him and trying to pull the wool over voters\u2019 eyes,\u201d Labour\u2019s deputy leader said.<\/p>\n
