Donald Trump\u2019s $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization fund,\u201d meant to compensate his political allies and Jan 6 rioters, is officially dead after the president\u2019s pick for attorney general, Todd Blanche, announced it had been \u201crescinded.\u201d<\/p>\n
Blanche released a memo late Sunday declaring Trump\u2019s slush fund would not go into effect. The move could secure the votes of Republican senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, who were blocking Blanche\u2019s nomination to become attorney general. The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on Blanche\u2019s confirmation Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy team and I have met with committee members and Senators over the past seven weeks and addressed any concerns or outstanding questions,\u201d Blanche wrote on X. \u201cWe have enjoyed good faith discussions, and as a result issue the following order and update with regard to the May IRS settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Blanche’s post included a signed order dated Sunday that read: \u201cThe Attorney General\u2019s May 18, 2026 Order establishing the Anti-Weaponization Fund (\u2018Fund\u2019) is rescinded and shall have nor force or effect.\u201d<\/p>\n
The controversial \u201canti-weaponization fund\u201d was created in May as part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit from Trump against the IRS. It would have offered taxpayer money to people who claimed they were victims of weaponization by the federal government \u2014 including people involved in the January 6, 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n

(Reuters)Blanche had said that the Justice Department would not move forward with the fund at a June hearing but Cornyn and Tillis wanted to see that in writing before green-lighting him for attorney general.<\/p>\n
That appeared to be enough for Cornyn, one of the major holdouts.<\/p>\n
\u201cSen. Cornyn has reached an agreement with the Department of Justice, which will be issuing a formal order permanently terminating the anti-weaponization fund and making clear in a binding written document that the scope of the audit settlement is limited to only the plaintiffs, including the President, and the IRS,\u201d Cornyn spokesperson Natalie Yezbick said in a statement to The Independent. <\/p>\n
Cornyn, a member of the Judiciary Committee, has grilled Blanche about the nature of the IRS settlement during his confirmation hearing last month. Meanwhile, the other Republican holdout, Tillis, did not appear to have an immediate comment regarding the termination. <\/p>\n
In a statement, the Justice Department said that \u201calthough the Acting Attorney General has repeatedly advised Congress through testimony, including under oath, as well as in written responses, that the Fund is not moving forward, and the Department has repeatedly represented to district courts that the Fund is not moving forward, today\u2019s Order officially rescinds the May 18, 2026 Order.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since the presidents lawsuit against the IRS was announced, \u201cNo Members were appointed; no funds were transferred; no process for receiving claims was established; no claims were paid,\u201d the order says. \u201cThis order establishes, beyond any doubt, that there is no Fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Getty)But as late as Friday, Trump defended the need for the fund to compensate this group, whom he said were still suffering. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey are suffering still, many ruined, and I felt that they should be given compensation for what has been done to them,\u201d the president said on Truth Social. \u201cI will always feel that these victims of government abuse should be paid back for what they were forced to endure, their lives have been ruined!\u201d<\/p>\n
That prompted Tillis, who is retiring at the end of the year, to criticize Trump\u2019s plans in an X post. <\/p>\n
\u201cDespite comments as late as yesterday that the fund is dead, President Trump clearly intends to resurrect the payout pot for punks either by inappropriately establishing another bogus fund or pushing Congress to vote for a bill that the majority of Republicans in the Senate would be against,\u201d Tillis said. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that Todd Blanche, who I consider qualified for the job, will not be confirmed because of this reversal,\u201d Tillis added. \u201cHopefully, we can resolve this by Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n
Blanche, the president\u2019s former personal attorney, became deputy attorney general last year. When Trump dismissed Blanche\u2019s boss, Attorney General Pam Bondi, in April over her botched handling of the Epstein files, Blanche stepped in to the role. Trump formally nominated Blanche to become Attorney General in June.<\/p>\n
