The BBC is under immense pressure following the resignation of Tim Davie amid continuing furore over its editing of a speech by Donald Trump in a documentary.<\/p>\n
The broadcaster\u2019s director general resigned on Sunday alongside the chief executive of news, Deborah Turness, following repeated controversies over impartiality claims.<\/p>\n
The latest controversy involved a BBC Panorama episode called Trump: A Second Chance?, which critics have said was misleading in the way it edited the president\u2019s speech on 6 January 2021.<\/p>\n
The US president himself weighed in on the resignations and said the documentary, which aired a week before the US presidential election last year, had been an attempt to \u201cstep on the scales of a presidential election\u201d.<\/p>\n
Questions have been asked about how effectively the BBC has dealt with accusations of institutional bias, as it failed to either defend itself or apologise.<\/p>\n

In the original speech, Mr Trump said: \u201cWe’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the edit put the first part of that speech with another section from 50 minutes later, so he was shown saying: \u201cWe\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol … and I\u2019ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, it would not be until over a year later that the edit would place enough pressure on the BBC to warrant resignations.<\/p>\n

The memo was then leaked by a whistleblower to The Telegraph last week, which published extracts from it, including: \u201cIt was completely misleading to edit the clip in the way Panorama aired it. The fact that he did not explicitly exhort supporters to go down and fight at Capitol Hill was one of the reasons there were no federal charges for incitement to riot.\u201d<\/p>\n
The report sparked criticism from both sides of the Atlantic, including from the president\u2019s son himself.<\/p>\n
Donald Trump Jr posted on X (Twitter) last week: \u201cThe FAKE NEWS \u2018reporters\u2019 in the UK are just as dishonest and full of s—t as the ones here in America!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Trump\u2019s press secretary Karoline Leavitt also criticised the BBC, telling The Telegraph: \u201cThis purposefully dishonestly, selectively edited clip by the BBC is further evidence that they are total, 100 per cent fake news that should no longer be worth the time on the television screens of the great people of the United Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC\u2019s culture and media editor, Katie Razzall, reported that the broadcaster had a statement \u201cready to go\u201d, admitting it should have made it clear there had been splicing of the speech but that instead, the board decided to send a letter to parliament\u2019s culture, media and sport committee.<\/p>\n
It was also reported that Ms Turness was \u201cripped apart\u201d by a board meeting last week about The Telegraph reports.<\/p>\n

Ms Turness said controversy around the Panorama edit had \u201creached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC \u2013 an institution that I love\u201d, but insisted there is \u201cno institutional bias\u201d at the BBC and she stands by the journalism of her team.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump led the reaction to the resignations, writing on Truth Social: \u201cThe TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting\/FIRED, because they were caught \u201cdoctoring\u201d my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former editor of The Sun newspaper described the resignations as a \u201ccoup\u201d and an \u201cinside job\u201d.<\/p>\n
David Yelland told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme: \u201cThere were people inside the BBC, very close to the board, very close to the, on the board, who have systematically undermined Tim Davie and his senior team over a period of [time] and this has been going on for a long time. What happened yesterday didn\u2019t just happen in isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n
A former Downing Street communications chief suggested the broadcaster had not properly defended itself, saying: \u201cWe\u2019re living in a fast-moving digital world where there are a lot of people who want to attack the BBC, and what we\u2019ve seen is really a vacuum that has been created.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been obvious for days now that the BBC needed to step up, explain, apologise, move on.<\/p>\n
