The disgraced music titan, 55, was convicted in July on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, also known as the Mann Act. Combs begged Judge Arun Subramanian for \u201cmercy\u201d and acknowledged his behavior was \u201cdisgusting, shameful and sick. However, Subramanian said that a \u201csubstantial sentence must be given.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, Combs\u2019s attorneys say they will appeal the sentence. His defense attorney, Brian Steel, called it \u201cun-American\u201d in an interview with CNN. <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople get \u2014 god forbid \u2014 falsely accused of a crime, they go to trial, they have all the witnesses testify, credibility is determined, the jury reaches a verdict, and finds in their favor \u2014 and then they get sentenced for the same exact conduct that the jury found that they did not commit,\u201d Steel said. \u201cIt seems un-American.\u201d<\/p>\n
Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo also said the sentence was \u201cunconstitutional\u201d and claimed the judge used the word \u201ccoercion\u201d at least a dozen times, even though the jury \u201cfound that there was not coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prosecution wanted Combs to receive at least 11 years in prison, while the defense argued for a more lenient sentence of 14 months.<\/p>\n
