Police are on scene or on the way,\u201d the university said in a post on social media platform X shortly after midday Thursday. \u201cContinue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.\u201d<\/p>\n
The active shooter was reported in the Student Union area of the campus, which police said has now been cleared. <\/p>\n

Multiple gunshots were reported and a significant police presence rushed to the campus.<\/p>\n
Classes have been canceled at the university for the rest of the day and on Friday.<\/p>\n

Students hid in the student union’s bowling alleyRyan Cedergren, a 21-year-old communications student, said he and about 30 others hid in the bowling alley in the union’s lower level after seeing students running from a nearby bar.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn that moment, it was survival,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
After about 15 minutes, university police escorted the students out of the building and he saw a person getting emergency treatment on the lawn, he said.<\/p>\n
Chris Pento told WCTV in Tallahassee that he and his twins were getting lunch at the student union during a campus tour when they heard gunshots. \u201cIt was surreal. And people just started running,\u201d he told the TV station.<\/p>\n
They packed into a service elevator after encountering locked doors at the end of a hallway. \u201cThat was probably the scariest point because we didn’t know. It could get worse, right?\u201d he said. \u201cThe doors opened and two officers were there, guns drawn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witness: ‘ I saw him shoot the lady like right in front of him’A witness has told how she saw the alleged shooter fire at a woman on campus. <\/p>\n
FSU junior McKenzie Heeter told NBC News that she was near the student union when she saw \u201ca guy in an orange Hummer\u201d pull up and get out of his vehicle with a rifle.<\/p>\n
He took out the weapon and shot in her direction, she said. She called the police just before midday to report the shooting.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he was shooting and he missed. So he goes back into his car and grabs a pistol, then he turns and shoots the lady in front of him,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I just started running.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he turned back around with the pistol, I saw him shoot the lady like right in front of him. She was probably like 5 feet in front of him with the pistol,\u201d Heeter added.<\/p>\n
The student said she ran back to her apartment as fast as she could and warned others to stay away from campus.<\/p>\n
