Iran launched explosive drones and fired ballistic and cruise missiles at Israel late yesterday night in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, a retaliatory strike that raised fears of a wider regional war.<\/p>\n
Sirens wailed and heavy thuds and bangs were heard from what local media called aerial interceptions of explosive drones. Authorities said a seven-year-old girl was critically injured.<\/p>\n
The attack came amid rising tensions following an attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus.<\/p>\n
Tehran had vowed retaliation for the strike earlier this month which killed several of its senior military leaders even as the US and its allies made intense diplomatic efforts to try and contain the fallout.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said most of the Iranian missiles were intercepted outside Israel\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n
The Iranian salvo included over 200 drones and missiles, Mr Hagari added, and it caused light damage to one Israeli military facility.<\/p>\n
US president Joe Biden condemned Iran\u2019s attack as he reaffirmed America\u2019s \u201cironclad commitment\u201d to Israel in a call with Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
