Fears are growing for the four people missing in Acapulco after a \u201cnightmare\u201d Category-5 hurricane ripped through the city.<\/p>\n
At least 27 people are dead and four people are missing after Hurricane Otis brought 165mph winds and torrential rainfall to Acapulco on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Flora Contreras Santos, a housewife who lives on the outskirts of the city, told of her fear after her three-year-old neighbor was swept away from her mother in a mudslide. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe mountain came down on them. The mud took her from the mother\u2019s arms,\u201d she told the Associated Press. \u201cWe need help, the mother is in bad shape and we can\u2019t find the girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda announced the establishment of a WhatsApp line to help people contact their families after communications went down in Acapulco on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
Otis is the strongest ever storm to make landfall on Mexico\u2019s west coast. The hurricane underwent explosive intensification from a Category 1 to Category 5 in just 12 hours, catching forecasters by surprise. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) described it as a \u201cnightmare scenario\u201d for the region. <\/p>\n

There is no water here, there is no food,\u201d she told the LA Times. \u201cPeople are stealing everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
She recalled seeing the destruction of the city\u2019s hotel district in the wake of the storm. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt makes you want to cry because everything is so ugly, so destroyed,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Another man told the outlet that he had spent hours trekking around the partially-destroyed city in search of medication for aunt, who was recently released from a cancer ward. <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are desperate but they are taking whatever they can, even if they don\u2019t need it,\u201d Manuel Magall\u00f3n told NPR. \u201cMy aunt really needs this medication. It\u2019s disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n
