Boris Johnson is reportedly urging Tories privately to back him for prime minister, promising that only he can save the party from a total wipeout.<\/p>\n
The former PM is returning from a holiday in the Caribbean and has been reaching out to MPs, including Rishi Sunak, who is \u201ccertain\u201d to contest again.<\/p>\n
Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak are leading the polls as favourites to replace Liz Truss, who dramatically quit yesterday after just 44 days in Downing Street, accepting the near-total collapse of support among colleagues and becoming the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.<\/p>\n
Mr Johnson was reaching out to Mr Sunak to \u201cget back together\u201d as the ex-leader believes he is the candidate with the best chance of winning another election for the Conservatives, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n
A maximum of three candidates will be able to stand in the leadership contest after party chiefs decided hopefuls needed the support of 100 colleagues to get on the ballot. MPs will vote on the final two candidates before Tory members are given the final say, the Tory backbench 1922 Committee chair said. <\/p>\n

The Privileges Committee is examining whether the former prime minister committed contempt of Parliament by misleading MPs over the Partygate scandal. MPs voted in April for an investigation to be opened into Mr Johnson.<\/p>\n
Mr Johnson told MPs in December 2021 that \u201call guidance was followed completely in No 10\u201d, six months before Scotland Yard issued more than 100 fines, including to the then prime minister personally, for law-breaking Covid parties.<\/p>\n
The committee is expected to sit in November and can last for around three weeks.<\/p>\n
No rules would forbid Mr Johnson from being prime minister again, even soon after his first stint ended. Mr Johnson is also a popular figure among Tory voters – with strong celebrity status – despite losing the trust of other groups of voters.<\/p>\n
