Moment Liz Truss appears in Commons after mystery absence<\/p>\n
Liz Truss has insisted that she will lead the Conservatives into the next general election, in spite of a new poll showing that her party faces a wipeout.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the BBC, she admitted she made \u201cmistakes\u201d and went \u201ctoo far too fast\u201d with reforms that triggered economic turmoil. <\/p>\n
However, she said that she was \u201ccompletely committed to delivering for this country\u201d despite questions over who was now in control of government policy.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Jeremy Hunt said Ms Truss will remain prime minister at Christmas, despite a growing campaign among Tory backbenchers to oust her.<\/p>\n
Mr Hunt called on critics within the Conservative Party to \u201cgive her a chance\u201d and denied that he had ambitions to succeed her as PM. <\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, the new chancellor ripped up the government\u2019s controversial economic plan, dramatically reversing most of the tax cuts and spending plans that Ms Truss and his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng announced less than a month ago. <\/p>\n

1666050610What do the government\u2019s tax changes mean for me?Liz Truss\u2019s new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has ditched further tax cuts introduced by his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng as part of the disastrous \u201cmini-Budget\u201d he unveiled on 23 September \u2013 which spooked the markets with \u00a345bn in unfunded tax cuts \u2013 during an emergency statement in which he also dramatically scaled back support for household energy bills from two years to six months.<\/p>\n
Mr Hunt, who was only appointed on Friday, said he would be abandoning plans to cut the basic rate of tax by 1p, which had been due to be brought forward to April, and that it would remain at 20p in the pound until the country can afford to reduce it.<\/p>\n
The cut in dividend tax promised by Mr Kwarteng will also go, along with VAT-free shopping for overseas tourists, the freeze on alcohol duty and the easing of the IR35 rules for the self-employed.<\/p>\n
