Ukraine is in full control of the eastern logistics hub of Lyman, Kyiv\u2019s most significant battlefield gain in weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs of 1230 (0930 GMT), Lyman is fully cleared,\u201d Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a short video clip on his Telegram channel today.<\/p>\n
It comes as the US defence secretary Lloyd Austin has welcomed Ukraine\u2019s capture of the city and said the taking of the former Russian stronghold makes the war \u201cmore difficult\u201d for Putin.<\/p>\n
Mr Austin told a news conference on Sunday he was \u201cvery encouraged\u201d after Saturday\u2019s success by Ukrainian military forces.<\/p>\n
He noted that Lyman was positioned across supply lines that Russia has used to push its troops and materiel down to the south and to the west, as the Kremlin presses its more than seven-month-long invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout those routes, it will be more difficult. So it presents a sort of a dilemma for the Russians going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ukrainian soldiers announced the capture on Saturday in a video recorded outside the town council building in the centre of Lyman and posted on social media by Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of president Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The German ministry put the total value of the procurement at 92 million euros ($90 million), with the three countries financing it equally.<\/p>\n

Videos posted online at around 11.20am on Sunday – and shared by Mr Zelensky\u2019s office – showed Ukrainian soldiers raising the country\u2019s national blue and yellow flag at the entrance to the town.<\/p>\n
