Billionaire and associate of US President Elon Musk said Saturday he hoped Europe and the United States would agree to a “zero-tariff situation,” AFP reported.

Such a situation would effectively create a free trade zone spanning the Atlantic Ocean, he said.

“I hope everyone agrees that both Europe and the United States should, in my view, ideally move to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk told Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.

During his conversation with Salvini, Musk said he also hoped for greater freedom of movement between Europe and the United States.

“If people want to work in Europe or North America, they should be allowed to do so, in my opinion,” Musk said, adding that this was ”certainly my advice to the president.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump imposed global duties on almost all global imports.

This caused a mixed reaction in the countries of the European Union. The bloc’s leadership promised to take tough measures in response, while some member states, such as Italy, called not to panic and weigh the pros and cons.
