Chelsea vs PSG LIVE: Team news as Rosenior makes Estevao call in bid for comeback against Champions League holders

An entertaining affair in Paris was in the balance until Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck twice in the final five minutes to secure a sizeable advantage from which tonight’s hosts may struggle to recover. It was another performance that showed the array of attacking talent within the PSG ranks as they target the defence of their European crown.

Chelsea, though, showed that they possess plenty of forward threat, too, though a 1-0 domestic defeat to Newcastle was a real set-back. Liam Rosenior is also without his captain tonight after Reece James suffered a hamstring issue, and the London club face a huge ask if their continental campaign is to continue.

Chelsea hold a three-goal deficit in this tie. Only one team in Champions League history has gone on to eliminate the holders in the knockout stages after losing the first leg by as many as three goals: Deportivo de La Coruña versus Milan in the 2003/04 quarter-finals (lost 1-4 away, won 4-0 at home).

Story of the first leg: PSG 5-2 ChelseaJust in case you need a reminder of what happened last week…

The Blues started the second half on top once more though, showing signs of what they can do when it all clicks as Pedro Neto cutback to Enzo Fernandez, who fired a superb finish in to level it once more.

However, that was the last of ‘good Chelsea’ on the night.

What followed was a dramatic collapse in the final 20 minutes of the first leg, with the Blues conceding three goals to leave themselves with a supremely difficult task this evening.

It all started with a mistake from Jorgensen, who fired a pass straight to a PSG player before Vitinha cushioned a lob over him for 3-2.

And Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came on to torment the Blues, scoring a magnificent fourth before bundling in a late goal to give Rosenior’s side a mountain to climb.

PSG started as you’d expect the holders to do at home, scoring early on as Bradley Barcola smashed a superb opener past Filip Jorgensen, but it was Chelsea in control after that, Liam Rosenior’s side putting together some lovely stuff before Malo Gusto fired them level.

The visitors failed to build on that leveller though, Ousmane Dembele scoring a second on the counter to leave the Blues trailing at half-time.

Match statsChelsea are winless in their last five Champions League games against Paris SG (D2 L3); their joint-longest winless run against an opponent in the competition (also 5 v Bayern Munich – April 2005 to September 2025).

PSG are unbeaten in their last five games against English teams in the Champions League (W4 D1), and could go six in a row without defeat against them in the competition for the first time here.

Chelsea to make ‘decision’ on pre-match huddle after farcical referee debacleRosenior reiterated his stance that the huddle is not designed to intimidate or cause annoyance.

However, he declined to confirm whether the practice would be repeated as his side prepares to face PSG, needing to overcome a significant 5-2 deficit from the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea learn Pedro Neto verdict after pushing PSG ball boyChelsea winger Pedro Neto has escaped a ban for pushing a ball boy in last week’s Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain.

Neto pushed the ball boy off his chair in the closing stages of Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Parc des Princes, as he tried to retrieve the ball, sparking a melee between players from both sides.

The Liam Rosenior gamble that could haunt Chelsea after PSG lessonThe report from a dramatic first leg in Paris…

A tie that had looked enthrallingly unpredictable, only for the first leg to be set by perhaps the most predictable development possible.

Liam Rosenior had replaced Robert Sanchez with Filip Jorgenson specifically for his footwork, and of course it was a bad goalkeeper pass that set up Vitinha for a decisive goal.

After that, Paris Saint-Germain took a step up – and then another two – and Chelsea didn’t go with them.
