Attacker on Armenian cemetery in Istanbul arrested

An unidentified person broke into the cemetery of the Armenian Saint Garabet Church in the Uskudar district of Istanbul on Tuesday evening and damaged six tombs and a fountain, the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople had reported.

The Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office later announced that an investigation had been launched into the vandalism of these graves, Ermenihaber reported.

As a result of the instructions given to law enforcement agencies, M.K. was identified as a suspect and was detained less than 48 hours later, on Thursday.

The respective statement added that the suspect was first brought to the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, and then sent to the court with a motion to be arrested.

Work is underway to ascertain all the circumstances of this incident.
