Armenia 3rd president Serzh Sargsyan charged with taking bribe of about $3M

Armenia’s third president, Serzh Sargsyan, has been charged with taking a bribe of about $3 million.

Accordingly a result of actions carried out in the criminal proceedings examined by the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia, it was substantiated that the person holding the position of the president of the country, using his official position to facilitate actions in favor of the director of an LLC—namely, to prevent the transaction of selling 100 percent of the company’s shares to a non-resident company in Armenia, in February and April 2008, with the assistance of the person who held the position of senior assistant to the prime minister during that period—took a bribe of $2,985,000 from the aforementioned businessman.

The criminal proceedings substantiated that on February 20, 2008, the former high-ranking official, with the assistance of a number of persons, received a part of this bribe—i.e. $2,660,000—in cash from the aforementioned businessman, and the rest was received through the assistance of a number of related individuals.

The aforesaid person holding the position of president has been charged for taking a bribe.

The investigation into the part separated from the criminal proceedings concerning him has been completed.

The materials of the proceedings and an indictment have been handed over to the supervising prosecutor, with a motion to approve and send it to court.

According to our information, the aforesaid president is the third president of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan.
